What is an AVIF file?
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It gives smaller files than JPG at the same quality, so more websites and some phones now save images as AVIF. The downside is compatibility: older apps, the default Windows Photos app, and many programs still can't open .avif files.
Why won't my AVIF file open on Windows?
A clean Windows 11 install does not include the AV1 codec the Photos app needs, so double-clicking an AVIF often fails with an 'unsupported format' error or a black preview. You can install the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store to view them, but converting to JPG is the fix that works in every app and every upload form.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
