Why iPhone photos won't open

Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC files by default. The format is great for storage — about half the size of JPG at the same quality — but it does not work with many Windows apps, older email clients, government portals, or older web forms. When someone says "your photo will not open" or asks for "a regular JPG", they mean: convert it.

Fileoholic's HEIC converter does this fully in your browser. The HEIC decoder is a small WebAssembly module that runs locally on your device. Your photos do not get uploaded to any server, do not get scanned for metadata, and do not leave your phone or computer.

Your files never leave your browser.

All processing runs locally on your device. No uploads, no tracking of file content.

FAQ

What is a HEIC file?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11. It saves space but is not supported by older Windows apps, web forms, or social media uploads. Converting to JPG fixes this.

Can I convert HEIF files to JPG too?

Yes. HEIF (.heif) is the same format family as HEIC, and this converter accepts both. Drop a .heic or .heif file and it converts to JPG or PNG the same way — all in your browser, no upload.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The HEIC decoder runs in your browser using WebAssembly. Photos are never sent to a server.

Why is the first conversion slow?

The HEIC decoder is a small WebAssembly module that loads on first use. After that, conversions are fast.

What is the maximum file size?

25 MB per file. HEIC decoding uses more memory than JPG, so mobile browsers can struggle with bigger photos.

Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?

Yes. Drop several at once and each is converted and downloaded in turn.

Can I convert HEIC to PNG instead of JPG?

Yes. Pick PNG in the output format selector. PNG is lossless, so it keeps every pixel exactly — best when you plan to edit the photo afterward. JPG is smaller and fine for sharing or uploading.

Is there a limit on how many HEIC files I can convert?

No. There is no daily cap, no signup wall, and no watermark. Convert unlimited HEIC files free.

Why isn't my HEIC file opening on Windows?

Windows did not support HEIC natively until late Windows 10. Many email clients, banking portals, and forms still reject .heic uploads. Converting to JPG fixes every one of these cases.

Can I convert HEIC files saved in Dropbox or iCloud?

Yes. Download the HEIC file from Dropbox or iCloud to your device first, then drop it into the converter. The conversion still runs locally in your browser.

Does the conversion lose quality?

JPG output uses lossy compression (default quality 90 is visually identical to most viewers). Pick PNG for fully lossless output if quality matters.
